How Do You Get Mud Out of Clothes?
Getting mud out of clothing effectively is a multi-step process that includes waiting for the mud to dry before spot treating it and then tossing it into a laundry load.
While it may be counterintuitive to let a stain to set in, you should wait so the mud can dry on your clothing before you attempt to wash it off. Because mud is wet dirt or a mixture of clay, soil, and silt bound with water, trying to get it off while it is still wet can spread the stain out and cause it to set deeper into your clothing.
As a result, you should wait for the mud to dry completely on your clothing before attempting to clean it. Once the mud is dry, use your fingers, a toothbrush, or any other softer brush to try to eliminate any of the surface-level dirt on the clothing. Wipe off the brush or toothbrush in between swipes so you don’t accidentally spread the stain out.
Afterwards, try to spot clean the stain with a laundry powder or stain remover solution before throwing into a washing machine load. If possible, wash the clothes in warm water to further treat the stains once they are in the machine. Hot water helps stain molecules to break down and dissolve.

When you get mud on your water-washable carpet, spot treat the stain with a stain remover powder.
It can feel like a serious disaster when you get a mud stain on your carpet, whether it’s from a dirty shoe pressing in or a pet running around after rolling in the yard, so try OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover. Can Mud Stain Clothes Permanently?
Mud should not stain your clothes for good so long as you treat them properly and in time.
After spot treating and washing your mud-stained clothes for the first time, check and see if the stain is still visible. If it is, you may need to run the clothes through the wash again. Keep the stained clothes out of the dryer until the stain is gone so it doesn’t settle in permanently.
Is It Possible to Remove Mud Stains After Drying?
Heat from the dryer can cause stains to set in more deeply, but your mud-stained clothes aren’t necessarily a lost cause if they’re still stained.
If you notice that your garment still has a mud stain on it after the dryer, treat it again with OxiClean™ Max Force Laundry Stain Remover Spray or soak it in water mixed with OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover.
Then wash the garment again as normal (preferably in hot water, but check the laundry care tag to see the proper washing instructions). When the wash cycle concludes, look at the garment to see if the mud stain is still there. Avoid putting it in the dryer again if the stain has not gone away. If the stain is gone, then you can dry the item as normal.
Should You Use Hot or Cold Water to Get Rid of Mud Stains?
When possible, you should use hot water to remove mud stains from your clothes. The higher water temperature helps dissolve and break down the mud stain, giving you the best shot possible to remove it completely.
Check the laundry care tag on the inside of your clothing item to confirm whether or not the stained garment can be washed in hot water.
