How to Wash Costumes and Cosplay Items

Follow instructions on the package to mix water and OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover to create a cleaning solution. Stir until dissolved. Try using a sink, laundry tub, bucket, or large bowl.

Use a clean, white towel to blot out the stain or to address dirty areas such as costume armpits, knees, or sleeves. Repeat this step as many times as needed until the stained area looks clean.

Rinse using a different clean white towel, dampened with clean, cool water.

Allow costume item to air dry.

Read the manufacturer’s care label inside a store-bought costume item. Pay attention to whether the item can be machine washed, what water temperature, whether bleach can be used, and if the item can be tumble dried.

Moisten a paper towel or clean white rag with warm water, and press onto an inconspicuous area of the garment, such as an inside hem or seam. If any of the color comes off onto your towel, do not submerge the item in water.

Use the scoop in OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover and follow instructions on the package to create a cleaning solution in a bucket, tub or laundry sink. If desired, add a small amount of mild laundry detergent, such as OxiClean™ Liquid Laundry Detergent Sparkling Fresh Scent. Mix until the powder is fully dissolved.

Turn the costume item inside out, then submerge it in the OxiClean™ solution and swish it around gently. Soak for at least 15 minutes or up to 6 hours to help brighten colors, counter dinginess, and fight odors.

Remove the cleaning solution and rinse the costume thoroughly with cold water. Be careful not to twist or wring delicate fabrics. Use a towel to soak up excess water.

If your costume is machine washable (check the label or manufacturer's website), skip the rinse step and place your item in the washer. Select a low-spin or delicates cycle, cool water and a gentle detergent. For an extra boost to your detergent, add a scoop of OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover to your washing machine drum before adding clothes.

If handwashing the costume, lay flat or hang to dry. If your item’s care label allows for tumble dry, opt for the permanent press or lower heat cycles to help reduce chances of fabric damage.
