How to Clean a Comforter or Duvet

Have you ever thought about the difference between a duvet and a comforter and how to wash both bedding pieces? Perhaps the biggest distinction is that duvets have covers.

Duvet covers are vital in keeping the other piece, the insert, clean. The beauty of a duvet cover is that they're easy to remove and wash separately. Since they have the weight of a sheet or thin blanket vs the bulk of a comforter or the insert, they can be easier to wash, especially in smaller machines. Using a duvet cover also reduces how often you need to wash the insert, which can help keep it fluffy.

It’s important to know how to wash a duvet cover so you can avoid knotting and tangling while still removing odors and stains. Because it protects the insert, you should also wash the duvet cover weekly or when you wash your sheets. Follow these directions and use the power of OxiClean™ Odor Blasters Versatile Stain & Odor Remover to erase lingering smells and clean your duvet cover.

1. Mix

Remove the duvet cover from the insert before pre-treating stains. Mix water and OxiClean™ Odor Blasters Versatile Stain & Odor Remover to line 2 to 4 per gallon of water (follow instructions on the package) to create a cleaning solution. Stir until dissolved. Try using a sink, laundry tub or bathtub.

2. Soak

Soak the duvet cover in your cleaning solution for 1-6 hours depending on the severity of staining.

3.  Wash

Wash the duvet cover by itself in the washer. Use warm (not hot) water and add liquid laundry detergent for best results. Add a scoop of OxiClean™ Odor Blasters Versatile Stain & Odor Remover to the washer drum before inserting the duvet cover for a whiter and brighter finish.

4.  Dry

Move the duvet cover from the washer to the dryer and tumble dry on low.

Soaking the duvet cover will help loosen set-in stains so they are more easily removed. Assess the stain(s) in question before deciding how long to soak the cover.

Always test OxiClean™ Odor Blasters Versatile Stain & Odor Remover on a small area before using. Read your duvet’s labels and follow manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid using fabric softeners. Wash duvet cover on its own to help prevent tangling. Do not use on fabrics labeled dry clean only.
